Mitsubishi Recalls 14,700 Electric Vehicles

In yet another body blow for the electric vehicle industry it was today revealed that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is recalling 14,700 electric vehicles due to brake problems. These issues are exclusively associated with the company’s electric vehicles and even though this recall is relatively small compared to the number of petrol vehicles which have been recalled over the years it is still around 50% of overall sales of these particular vehicles.

What cars are being recalled?

The company has revealed that 3,400 i-MiEV EVs and 2,400 MINICAB-MiEV vehicles have been recalled in Japan with around 8,900 i-MiEV vehicles also being recalled in Europe. While there have been no accidents directly associated with the ongoing brake problem the company has obviously erred on the side of caution with regards to such an important aspect of the vehicle. It is believed that only one particular part of the braking system has been found to have problems and this will be relatively easy for the company to fix once the cars have been recalled.

What is the cost of this recall?

While the number of vehicles set to be recalled is relatively small, and the direct financial implications are relatively minor in the overall picture, it is more the image of the company and EVs which will suffer. If you look back towards the end of 2012 we had the issue of the Nissan Leaf battery problem which was headline news for some time and did more damage to the electric vehicle industry. This fresh issue will be headline news for the next few days at a time when the electric vehicle industry is looking to penetrate the worldwide consumer sector.

Does this impact Mitsubishi’s electric vehicle strategy?

While there is no doubt this has done short-term damage to the reputation of Mitsubishi it is also worth noting that the company has erred on the side of caution and recalled these vehicles before there have been any accidents. The issue itself relates to the distance at which a vehicle will travel when under braking which has been extended due to problems with an electric pump. Historically we have seen scandals in other areas of the automobile industry where issues and problems have been ignored for some time but Mitsubishi has reacted as soon as possible.

In some ways we should be taking our hats off to the company for the speed at which it has reacted, the fact that no accidents have been directly linked the problem and the fact that vehicles will be repaired at no cost to the owner.

One step forward, two steps back with the electric vehicle industry

At this moment in time it seems as if the electric vehicle market takes one step forward and two steps back with a number of high-profile issues having grabbed the headlines. This does mask to a great extent developments in technology and battery power which have made the modern-day electric vehicle very different to that of its counterpart just 10 years ago or even five years ago. Once these “issues” have been ironed out then we should see more positive feedback and more positive headlines about the industry although at the moment Mitsubishi Electric Vehicles are certainly grabbing more than their fair share of media attention.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see how consumers react to this latest difficulty with an electric vehicle as it does nothing for the sector’s public relations. It is very easy to get scared about certain issues such as this announced by Mitsubishi but the fact is that the company highlighted the problem, there have been no accidents and all vehicles affected have been recalled. Whether the speed at which new electric vehicles are released to the market slows down in the short to medium term, with perhaps more safety checks and testing required, remains to be seen.

Eliminate Chronic Car Problems With Electric Vehicle Conversions

Regardless of where you travel to in Australia, you will always be putting miles on your car. Unfortunately, the parts used in high performance engines found in modern cars wear out much faster than the ones used years ago. For example, the fuel pump in modern cars often dies out after 60,000 to 90,000 Km of travel. If you check your warranty information, you will most likely find that the fuel pump is not covered after 60,000 Km, even on an extended warranty plan. If your odometer reading is approaching this number, electric vehicle conversions may represent a cost effective way to get out of chronic expenses associated with a high mileage vehicle.

Critical Car Parts and High Compression Engine Wear

Not so long ago, fuel pumps were one of the easiest things on a car to replace. All you really needed to do was search around near the carburetor, take the old pump out, and then put the new one in. Typically, it was a job you could accomplish in under an hour, right in your own back yard. At the same time, fuel pumps tended to cost well under 100.00.

By contrast, today’s vehicles use fuel injectors that require a very high compression ratio from the fuel pump. This type of pump is almost always housed in the fuel tank. They also cost several hundred dollars per unit. In order to replace the pump, you will need to take out the fuel tank, and then hope the mechanic will not damage the neck of the tank while removing the old pump. Because it tends to be a difficult job, you may wind up paying well over $1500.00 to have a new pump installed. On top of that, if they do damage the gas tank, you may wind up spending an additional $1000.00 to solve that problem.

Once the fuel pump is replaced, it can significantly alter the electrical system of the vehicle. For example, a number of cars and trucks develop computer problems, as well as a tendency to die out randomly once the new fuel pump is installed. Electric cars are virtually maintenance free. Electric vehicle conversions are worth exploring, and much safer in this type of situation. At the very least, you won’t have to worry about the motor dieing at an inconvenient time.

While you may not be aware of it, compression gaskets, valves, fuel injectors, and engine heads wear out faster when exposed to higher combustion temperatures and compression ratios. No matter how well you maintain and service your vehicle, it will not change this aspect of modern engine performance. Once your car passes the 100,000 Km mark, the best of the engine and transmission lifespan will be used up. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why very few manufacturers will guarantee a vehicle engine and transmission past 100,000 Km. Under these conditions, electric vehicle conversions offer a viable, safer, and cheaper alternative to help you maintain reliable transportation.

Deep Engine Computer Problems and Internal Combustion Engines

Even though the computer modules in your car are often housed in easy to reach places, they obtain data from sensors deep within the engine. For example, oxygen sensors may be positioned within the cylinder head. There are also some sensors that may be housed deep in the engine block. In some cases, these sensors monitor the flow of oil and coolants through the block. Once these sensors malfunction, they can cause piston heads to seize up, as well as ruin other critical parts of the main engine. At the same time, replacing these sensors may cost several thousand dollars if the engine has to be taken out, or the warranty on the electrical system is up.

Therefore, when the fuel pump causes changes in the electrical system, it can have hidden consequences. As with other electrical devices, when a new component is added, it can disrupt the pattern, and lead to serious consequences. When you make use of electric vehicle conversions, you will not need to worry about disrupting the electrical harness or the engine sensors. In fact, you will no longer need to worry about an engine block at all. Instead, your vehicle will run on a nice, quiet electrical motor that requires very little in the way of maintenance.

The Best Cars for Electric Fuel Conversions

If you buy a used car, you will always worry about repairs if you do not take steps to change the engine, transmission, and fuel pump. That said, if another used car is in better shape than the one you have now, you can always see about getting an electric car conversion in the near future. At the very least, you can have peace of mind knowing that you will get many years of trouble free driving out of it.

People that own cars today do not realize they could have a financial time bomb sitting on their hands. Regardless of whether the fuel pump dies in the middle of traffic, or the engine gaskets blows, it will cost you to have the vehicle repaired. When you are under pressure to get your car back as quickly as possible, you will most likely go on paying bigger repair bills, rather than evaluate the expanded benefits associated with electric vehicle conversions. Take the time now to evaluate your financial commitment to owning a petrol car. Switching to all electric is easier than you realize.

Today, electric vehicle conversions are available right here in Australia. You can easily extend the life of your current vehicle, and help do your part in providing for a cleaner more sustainable future, especially in your part of the world. When it comes right down to it, if you own a car or two, the best thing you can do is look into electric vehicle conversions today.

Learn What All The Fuss Is About With Hybrid Vehicles

The popularity of hybrid vehicles skyrocketed the past few years as more and more people are becoming truly concerned about the cost of fuel. Some hybrids may look cool, but there are some that look sort of odd, but regardless of how they are built, the one thing they all have in common is that they are great cars to own. They engines have the ability of using both electric and fuel to power your vehicle. And as a result of this, you get to save lots of money on gasoline each year and your vehicle will produce less pollution.

So it’s not only a great for your financially, but it’s great for the planet as well. Now even though it may take a while, the supply of oil left on the planet will dry up due to the demand we have for it. And eventually we will have to adopt alternative fuels or alternative methods to fuel our vehicles. Fortunately, scientists across the globe have been working on this for decades and in addition to the methods they have all created, the invention of the hybrid vehicle is by far one of the best.

As people read more about Hybrid vehicles, the sales of them continue to rise. Now you may be wondering about what exactly make a hybrid vehicle so great and how does it work? Well, basically being a hybrid, it uses more than one type of technology to power your engine. They utilize a electrical system is combination with a typical fuel system. As for the main components of the car, hybrids are built basically the same way conventional vehicles are built. The only difference between them is that the hybrid has an electrical motor and sometimes even a generator built into it that works together with the other engine to power your automobile.

This type of dual engine system allows your car to use electricity to run off of which means that you will need to spend a lot less money on gasoline. Now there are a few different type of hybrid systems. First there’s the parallel version. The parallel system, the electrical motor and the furl engine is connected the vehicle’s transmission. And this allows the vehicle to switch between the two depending on the situation. In most cases, the electrical motor will be used at low speeds and than fuel will be used once the car reaches a certain mph.

Than there’s the system that is gaining popularity which is called the series hybrid system. With this type of setup, fuel doesn’t power the car at all. Basically, there is a generator located inside the vehicle that is powered by the fuel engine. And than than generator powers the batteries that in turn powers the car itself. Now, there are even hybrid systems that uses stored kinetic energy to charge the batteries in the car whenever the driver uses their brakes. So now after knowing this you can easily see how owning a hybrid vehicle can easily save you lots of money every year.

Another good thing about these type of vehicles is that the engines are usually a lot smaller than those typically used in fuel based vehicles. Not only that but the engines are also designed to use a lot less gasoline as well. And as for the vehicle itself, it built using materials like plastic and types of aluminum that are much lighter than the materials normally used to build cars. And lastly, in regards to pollution, hybrid vehicles is great for the planet because the amount of pollution it emits is nothing compared to most cars on the road.
